Aims of the EPRD

What are the aims of the EPRD?

The German Arthroplasty Registry (EPRD) aims to create a reliable data set for long-term assessment of the quality of hip and knee implants, to secure the outcome of medical treatment, and to reduce the number of unnecessary revisions. In particular, the focus is on learning more about the cumulative revision rate of arthroplasty, i.e. the time during which implants are functional in the body until a revision is necessary. EPRD is a joint project by physicians, hospitals, health insurance companies, and the medical device industry. In EPRD, routine data on endoprosthetic surgery is linked with other information from health insurance companies, followed by evaluating this information with a focus on quality of implants and on medical treatment.

Who benefits from the EPRD?

  • The public is informed about the quality of care.

  • Scientific societies receive information in order to evaluate the performance of new implants, new techniques, and new fields of application.

  • For the health-insurance companies, the quality of medical treatment is made transparent.

  • Hospitals are provided with comparative analyses for assessing their own quality.

  • Implant manufacturers receive feedback about performance of their products and can use these data for implant surveillance and (re)certification with Notified Bodies.
